Somabhai, who studied four books, got a 'patent' for indigenous medicine for animal treatment,

Vadodara: India is a repository of knowledge. Knowledge has been worshiped here for centuries. It is not that only educated or educated people have rights over knowledge. Even those people who are called uneducated or illiterate have knowledge that even scientists do not have. This knowledge is inherited from generation to generation. One such case is that of Somabhai Dhithabhai Parmar of Bhensal village in Panchmahal district.

The Government of India has given a 'patent' in the field of 'veterinary medicine' to 73-year-old Somabhai, who studied only four books. Usually highly educated researchers from universities and institutes of science and technology get 'patents'. But even those who don't know what 'patent' means, we contacted Somabhai and got all the information about how he got the 'patent'.

Somabhai said 'I have studied up to the fourth standard. Two sons and one daughter have a family of 7 members. My grandfather Laxmidas Bhagwandas used to make medicine from the plants growing in the field and treat animals with it 100 years ago. Then my father Dhutabhai also used to do this work. I have also been treating animals free of charge by making native medicine for the last 40 years.'

'Desi medicine is made by mixing the leaves, bark, and fruit of the beelapatra tree, leaves of the plant called zezi, rhododendron leaves, three-leaved vine, coriander leaves, desi ghee, and water. This medicine is such that it relieves cattle from most diseases.'

He goes to villages and cities of Gujarat and Rajasthan and treats animals free of charge

Sombhai considers the work of treating animals with indigenous medicine as a service, so he does this work free of cost. After observing what kind of problem the animals have, they treat it by making medicine using different herbs.

Somabhai has medicine for many problems like if the animals have eaten iron objects, if the animal is swollen i.e. the body is swollen, if the animal is bitten by the animal, or if it has problems with feeding, jaundice, stomach problems. He makes medicine and treats animals wherever he goes.

They have the cure for most of the diseases of animals, and they consider animal treatment as a service

Not only in Shahra taluka but also in Panchmahal district and in different villages and cities of Gujarat, they treat animals. Many times they also go to treat animals in the neighboring state of Rajasthan. Somabhai said that wherever he has to go, he goes to treat the animals at a selfless price free of cost, if he has to go far away, he pays the fare for coming and going. There is no charge for other medicine or treatment.

Government's gloomy attitude towards research: Somabhai had forgotten that he had applied because the patent was granted after 13 years of application.

Somabhai, congratulations on getting a patent.... Somabhai was so happy after hearing this greeting that he felt that the government had announced some help. When we said twice that no help you have got a patent. Then Somabhai expressed surprise that what is a patent? We told them that you treat animals with herbs?

Then they remembered that yes, we have been doing it since our grandfather's time. I don't even remember. Some government officials filled out the form fifteen years ago, we do not know what happened after that.

It is worth mentioning that according to the information given in the Indian Patent Advanced Search System of the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade, Government of India, an application was made for a research patent in the pharmaceutical sector on 31 March 2011 in the name of Somabhai Dhulabhai Parmar. They have now received the patent on 23 June 2024 after 13 years. This makes it clear that the Government of India has a dismal attitude towards research in the field of science and technology.
