How was the study done?

An American research team studied the effects of a short-term vegetarian diet. For this, he gave one Jew of each pair a non-vegetarian diet for eight weeks, while the other went on a vegetarian diet.

Vegetarians can stay healthy for a long time

A study of the effects of diet on DNA in vegetarians found that DNA methylation was higher in non-vegetarians. In this process, gene expression deteriorates over time. This is called epigenetic aging. In the vegetarian diet, this process was observed less in organs like the heart, and liver, as well as in the metabolic and inflammatory system.

Heart and liver remain healthy

After eight weeks, the researchers found vegetarians had healthier hearts, livers, and inflammatory, and metabolic systems. This change was not observed in those eating a non-vegetarian diet. The authors cautioned that it is not clear how much of these changes can be linked to their diet.

Study published here

Data from the Twins Nutrition Study, based on the Study of Aging, was published in the journal Biomedical Central Medicine. The authors state that the results of this study can be best defined only after a follow-up study in a larger population.

Weight also decreases

A concern for the study was that the vegetarians lost an average of two kilograms more, while the vegetarians gained weight. Being underweight also reduces epigenetic aging. In addition, the authors also concluded that a vegetarian diet reduces calorie intake.
