Lung cancer rates 82% in men and 18% in women, shocking GCRI figures

World Lung Cancer Day: World Lung Cancer Day is celebrated on 1st August every year, day by day the number of lung cancer patients is increasing day by day all over the world including Gujarat and India. In the last five years, 4660 lung cancer patients have been registered in Ahmedabad's Government Cancer Hospital, GCRI alone.

Lung cancer is more common in men than women

According to the details of these patients, 82 percent of the patients are male and 18 percent of the patients are female. Thus the prevalence and risk of lung cancer is four to five times higher in men than in women and the biggest reason behind this is addiction to BD-cigarettes.

In the last five years, 4660 patients were registered in the government cancer hospital

4660 lung cancer patients have been registered in Gujarat Cancer and Research Institute (GCRI) of Civil Campus, Ahmedabad in the last five years i.e. from 2019 to 2023. Out of which 3841 patients are male and 819 patients are female. Thus the proportion of lung cancer in men is 82.42 percent and in women 17.58 percent.


Smoking is the cause of 85 percent of patients

According to the age of the patients, a maximum of 19.91 percent of the patients are between the ages of 60 to 65. However, 50 percent of patients are seen between the ages of 40 and 60. GCRI Director Dr. Shashank Pandya said that every year in the world more than 1.99 crore patients are registered with different cancers. Out of which more than 2490 lakhs are of lung cancer. Every year more than 18 lakh patients die of lung cancer in the world.


More than 81 thousand patients are diagnosed with lung cancer every year

Talking about India, more than 81 thousand patients are registered with lung cancer every year in India and about 75 thousand die out of them. Smoking is the main cause of lung cancer in 85 percent of patients. In the first and second stages, the patient is cured by giving treatment including operation or surgery and chemotherapy and radiotherapy. In just five years, 4990 patients have been registered in GCRI out of which 3290 are from Gujarat, 689 from Madhya Pradesh 68 from Uttar Pradesh, and the rest from other states.
