Sleep: Regular sleep and sleeping well is not only limited to giving rest to the body but is also very important for the health of the heart and brain. A recent study has revealed that if you do not have the habit of sleeping and waking up at the same time every day, the risk of heart attack and stroke can increase by 26%. This study was conducted on more than 72,000 people aged 40 to 79. The study found that sleep regularity is a major risk factor for heart disease, which is even more influential than sleep duration.
What does the research say?
The researchers divided the participants into three groups based on the 'Sleep Regularity Index'
Those with less sleep (SRI >87.3): The risk of heart disease is lowest.
Moderately irregular sleepers (SRI 71.6-87.3): Risk increased by 8%.
More irregular sleepers (SRI <71.6): Risk increased by 26%.
Research also showed that just getting enough sleep is not enough. If you do not keep your sleep schedule regular, the risk of heart disease will not be reduced.
Dangerous consequences of sleep irregularity
Due to irregular sleep, the body's 24-hour biological clock (circadian rhythm) becomes unbalanced. This clock controls not only metabolism but also hormonal activity. Its disruption can also affect heart attack, stroke, diabetes, and mental health.
How to improve?
Experts say that some simple measures can be adopted to maintain sleep regularity
- Go to bed and wake up at the same time.
- Reduce screen time (mobile, laptop) before bed.
- Eat light meals at night and avoid caffeine.
- Keep your sleeping environment quiet and dark
- Make it a habit to read or meditate before bed.
