Liver transplant physician Dr. Pathik Parikh said, 'There has been at least a 5.7-fold increase in cases of hepatitis A-related liver failure compared to the pre-corona period. The hepatitis 'A' virus, which used to be mild in humans, is now seen as more aggressive and has serious consequences. Many patients have to undergo liver transplants. In some cases, the virus leads to multiple organ failure and ultimately death.'
What are the symptoms of hepatitis 'A'?
It is a type of inflammation. It is caused by contaminated food, water or direct contact with an infected person. Its symptoms include extreme tiredness and weakness, sudden nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain or discomfort, loss of appetite, mild fever, dark urine, joint pain, and yellowing of the skin and the whites of your eyes (jaundice).
Risk of hepatitis due to poor hygiene
Hepatitis 'A' is mainly caused by poor hygiene and its cases increase during the monsoon season. It can be spread by drinking contaminated food or water. Hepatitis can be diagnosed with a simple blood test.
Hepatitis can also be caused by jaundice
If not treated properly and on time, jaundice can lead to hepatitis. The risk of liver failure due to hepatitis is 1 to 2 percent.
